Should History be Rewritten to Reflect Modern Values?

History. What comes to your mind when you hear this word? For many, it reminds them of magnificent events, great rulers and profound movements. As a student, it reminds me of giant textbooks and notes filled with names, dates and facts.

But history is more than just facts and dates. It is a narrative story shaped by who tells it and how they choose to narrate it. In the contemporary world, some argue that history should be rewritten to reflect modern values, prevent biases and include the voices that have been silenced for centuries. Should we rescript history, or should we preserve its authenticity?

Some say that rewriting history opens a world of unheard voices—women, minorities, and Indigenous people, to name a few. Traditional works often overlook these perspectives, limiting our understanding of an event from different standpoints. By broadening the views of people, we get the complete picture of any historic event and also create a more inclusive and unbiased forum for discussions.

However, some critics say that reshaping history can lead to presentism. According to Oxford Languages, presentism means “uncritical adherence to present-day attitudes, especially the tendency to interpret past events in terms of modern values and concepts.” Historical figures often had controversial views that were common in their time but are unacceptable today. Reinterpreting their opinions to discuss modern ideas can risk complicating the moral values of their era and may create havoc in their legacy.

Perhaps it is not about just rewriting history but reinterpreting it with a holistic approach, preserving the original purposes while adding analytical commentaries to help the readers fully comprehend the morals and values from the past. We must connect every part of history, be it Science, Math, literature, philosophy or the arts. All these concepts intertwine to create a complex yet beautiful representation of history that guides us in the modern world.

History is not just a record of the past—it is a reflection of humankind. By balancing the thoughts and ideas of people from different eras, we can create a better understanding of the past and its ethics to reflect on modern values.
